Legal Battles Expected Over Detainee Bill

AirTalk for September 29, 2006

President Bush's terror detainee bill, approved yesterday by the Senate, is headed to the House for final approval today. The legislation would create military tribunals for trying foreign terror suspects, without oversight by federal courts. Bush is expected to receive a bill he can sign into law soon, however legal battles are expected. Meanwhile the administration's previously secret wiretap program was passed by the House. Larry Mantle talks with John Eastman, Professor of Law, Chapman University School of Law, and Charles S. Doskow, Dean Emeritus and Professor of Law, University of La Verne College of Law, about the implications and constitutionality of these two bills.

Proposition 87

AirTalk for September 29, 2006

If approved by voters in November, Proposition 87 would tax oil companies to pay for alternative energy programs in California. The measure proposes to levee fees on companies drilling for oil until 4 billion dollars is generated. The funds would be directed toward reducing the state's dependence on gas and oil by 25% over the next 10 years. Larry Mantle talks with Shelley Luce from the Yes on 87 campaign, and Anita Mangels from the No on 87 campaign.
