Proposition 66: Limitations on "Three Strikes" Law
Host Larry Mantle talks about Proposition 66 which would amend the current "Three Strikes" sentencing to require that a second and third strike offense be a serious or violent felony, in order for the longer sentences required under Three Strikes to apply. Joining him to discuss the issue is Brian Gurwitz, senior Deputy District Attorney for Orange County, who is taking a leave to be the deputy campaign manager for “No on 66”, and Geri Silva, Executive Director, Families to Amend California’s Three Strikes.
Terrorism Prevention & Preparations in Los Angeles
Larry Mantle talks with Chief Bratton’s top counter-terrorism officer, John Miller, about what the Los Angeles Police Department is doing to prevent and prepare for terrorist attacks in Los Angeles.
Lessons Learned From How the LAPD Deals With Gang Warfare
The LAPD has spent years learning how to deal with gangs in Los Angeles. For some years now, the US military has looked to the LAPD for lessons on how it deals with gang warfare on the streets of Los Angeles. Counter-insurgency commanders are then able to apply this information to operations in populated areas, like on the streets of Iraq. Joining Larry is Deputy Chief Michael Hillmann, commanding officer of the Special Operations Bureau of the LAPD. Larry also talks with Major Seth Millstein, United States Marine Corps Reserve.
Hoarding
Hoarding is defined as the “excessive collection and retention of things or animals until they interfere with day-to-day functions such as home, health, family, work and social life.” While not a clinical diagnosis, experts treat this disorder as a serious mental and health problem. Intervention and therapy is necessary to help hoarders get their lives back. Dr Sarah Gelberd, M.D., Geriatrician and senior physician for the LA County Department of Mental Health, and Dr. Todd Hutton, Associate Medical Director of the Della Martin Center, and Psychiatric Unit at Huntington Memorial Hospital, Pasadena, join Host Larry Mantle to discuss the issue.
Earthquake Update
Larry discusses the 6.1 earthquake that happened this morning, centered a few miles southeast of Parkfield, a town located on the San Andreas Fault. Joining Larry is Susan Hough, Ph.D, geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Pasadena, and author of Finding Fault in California: An Earthquake Tourist’s Guide (Mountain Press Publishing Company).
