IRS Ends Investigation Of All Saints Church

AirTalk for September 24, 2007

The IRS dropped an investigation into the tax-exempt status of All Saints Church in Pasadena but the church is demanding an apology and an investigation into the federal probe. According to church officials, the IRS began investigating the church on June 9, 2005, raising questions about a guest sermon delivered two days before the 2004 election by the Rev. George Regas. All Saints asked for a Justice Department investigation into why political appointees within Justice approached IRS officials who work for the Treasury Department, to discuss alleged political violations by the Pasadena church during the 2004 election. Larry Mantle and guests discuss the IRS decision and the churches position regarding the case.

Treating Cancer With Nanotechnology

AirTalk for September 24, 2007

Caltech's Mark Davis has built custom-designed nanoparticles that deliver chemotherapy drugs to tumors in such a way that the adverse effects of the drugs on the rest of the body are minimized. These particles are being tested on patients at City of Hope in nearby Duarte, and are now in the planning stages for more extensive phase II trials. Davis began his work on nanoparticles at the request of his wife, who was being treated for breast cancer 10 years ago and suffering from the results of traditional chemotherapy. Dr. Davis joins Larry Mantle to talk about his research and the use nanotechnology to treat cancer.

The Skeptical Environmentalist's Guide To Global Warming

AirTalk for September 24, 2007

Bjorn Lomborg is a Danish political scientist and economist with a conservative approach to environmentalism. In his new book Cool It he argues that many of the elaborate and expensive actions now being considered to stop global warming will cost hundreds of billions of dollars and may very well have little impact on the world's temperature for hundreds of years. Rather than starting with the most radical procedures, Lomberg proposes that we first focus our resources on more immediate concerns, such as fighting malaria and HIV/AIDS and assuring and maintaining a safe, fresh water supply-which can be addressed at a fraction of the cost and save millions of lives within our lifetime. Bjorn Lomberg joins Larry Mantle to discuss his unconventional approach to the emotionally charged debate over global warming.
