Brothers' Road Trip To Bury Mother's Ashes
What happens to a tight-knit family when the death of its strongest member sends the living into a state of dysfunction? A new PBS documentary from P.O.V. chronicles the relationship and journey of two adult brothers who must take their mother's cremated ashes from their dusty Texas childhood home to her final resting place in Central Mexico. Larry Mantle speaks with the filmmaker and one of the sons about the film and the journey.
BPA Controversy
A study released this week by the Journal of the American Medical Association raises s a new concern about a chemical used in some plastics called Bisphenol-A, or BPA. In a health survey of nearly 1,500 adults, the study found that those exposed to higher amounts of BPA were more likely to report having heart disease and diabetes. Past animal studies have suggested reproductive and hormone-related problems from BPA, and lawmakers in several states are considering legislation banning the substance from baby bottles and sippy cups. Still some scientists consider the studies inconclusive, and the Food and Drug Administration says that more research is needed before they would consider banning or limiting the substance in food containers. Guests include Mitch Cheesman of the FDA, Pat Hunt, from Washington State University's School of Molecular Biosciences, and Steven Hentges, Executive Director of the Polycarbonate Bisphenol-A Global Group of the American Chemistry Council.
The Forever War
In Iraq there are two neighboring worlds that often never entwine - the Iraqi world and the American "Green Zone." In his new book, "The Forever War," author Dexter Filkins explains that outside of The Green Zone, Iraqis have a very different understanding of their war-torn surroundings, which Americans often purposely avoid seeing. Larry speaks with Filkins about the differences he has seen between the two sides and why we know very little about what exists beyond The Green Zone.
