State Budget
Larry gets the latest news about the state budget standoff between lawmakers and Governor Schwarzenegger from Aaron McLear, Press Secretary for Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Jordan Rau, L.A. Times reporter.
Proposition 4: Parental Notification Amendment
Proposition 4, a measure on this November's ballot, would require a 48-hour waiting period and parental notification before most minors could get abortions. A judge could waive the parental notification if it was determined to be in the girl's best interest. Similar proposals were rejected by voters in 2005 and 2006. Larry talks with Margie Pearson, volunteer and spokeswoman for the Yes on Proposition 4 campaign, and Miriam Gerace, Strategic Communications Director of the No on Prop 4 Campaign.
AIG Bailout
Yesterday evening the Feds stepped in with an $85-billion bailout for American International Group, or AIG. The effort to save the collapsing insurer is designed to avoid the largest corporate bankruptcy in history. In exchange, the government will hold an 80 percent stake in the company. Larry gets the latest from the Wall Street Journal's Heidi Moore.
L.A. Times Employees Sue Employer
Several former and current Los Angeles Times employees are suing the newspaper's corporate parent, Tribune Co., and its chief executive, Sam Zell. They contend that reckless management is destroying the value of the company. Larry talks with the plaintiff's lawyer, Phil Gregory, and with staff writer Dan Neil.
Terror, Mystery, The Birth Of Hollywood And The Crime Of The Century
When the Los Angeles Times building was bombed in the early morning hours of October 1, 1910, it was called "the crime of the century." Multiple explosions killed 21 Times workers at the hands of angry union officials. The crime captivated an infamous detective, a corrupt defense attorney, a movie director and a nation. Larry speaks with author Howard Blum, who chronicled the scandal in his new book, "American Lightning: Terror, Mystery, The Birth of Hollywood And The Crime Of The Century."
