Power Outage In Los Angeles: How Vulnerable Are We?
Almost 2 million people, from downtown Los Angeles to the San Fernando Valley, lost power Monday for 2 hours or more. Elevators stopped, traffic lights were out, and police were alerted but said terrorism was not suspected. The shutdown came after a Department of Water and Power crew incorrectly cut several control lines at a receiving station in the Toluca Lake area of the San Fernando Valley. A union official claimed Tuesday that workers who accidentally triggered the blackout were upgrading the city power system during peak daytime hours because the city was ``cutting corners'' and reluctant to pay higher wages at night. One City Council member questioned whether the outage was an intentional act by the union to influence the city’s position in an ongoing contract dispute with the union. Larry Mantle talks with the Ron Deaton, DWP General Manager, and Brian D’Arcy, Business manager for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 18 about the reasons for the power outage and the vulnerability of the city’s electrical grid.
