Roy Romer Selects A Plan For The Ambassador

Los Angeles Unified Schools Superintendent Roy Romer has selected a plan for the transformation of the historic Ambassador Hotel into a K thru 12 school. His plan would save the façade of the Ambassador and turn the Coconut Grove into an auditorium. But much of the hotel would be destroyed and replaced with new structures. The Board of Education will vote on the plan next month. Larry Mantle talks with Ken Bernstein, Director of Preservation Issues for the Los Angeles Conservancy, John Perez, President of the UTLA, and Ed Van Ginkel, senior development manager for the LAUSD new schools project at the Ambassador about the decision.

Glendale Special Election

In a special election on September 14th Glendale voters will decide whether or not developer Rick Caruso can build and open-air shopping center next to the Glendale Galleria. The project, entitled “Americana at Brand,” would include a $264-million retail and residential development. Larry Mantle is joined by Bill Fulton, Senior Scholar at USC's School of Public Policy and Development, Arthur Sohikian, spokesman for the “No” on Measures A,B, and C campaign, and Rick Caruso, Founder and CEO of Caruso Affiliated to discuss the issue.

The Assault Weapon Ban Expires

The federal ban on military-style assault weapons is set to expire on Monday. California maintains some of the toughest laws regulating these kinds of weapons, but the concern is that criminals will now be able to go to surrounding states and purchase assault rifles to bring back to Experts Lee Baca, LA County Sheriff, Hubert Williams, president of The Police Foundation, and Kelly Hobbs, spokeswoman for the NRA, join Host Larry Mantle with a variety of perspectives to discuss the expiration of the ban, what it means, and if it made any difference to the criminal use of these weapons.
