Financial Privacy
State Senator Jackie Speier’s “Financial Information Privacy Bill” died in the Assembly this week. If it had passed, the legislation would have imposed strict standards on businesses and would have required them to obtain consumers’ signatures before sharing or selling financial data. Polls have shown that California voters widely support greater financial privacy, yet, a surprising number of Assembly democrats voted against Speier’s bill, or chose not to vote altogether. Larry Mantle talks with State Senator Jackie Speier and State Assemblyman John Dutra.
“Portrait of Hedab”
This half-hour documentary, produced by KPCC's Aimee Machado, is an "audio diary" of Hedab El Tarifi, a Palestinian woman living in Los Angeles. As Hedab tries to sort out the role she and her fellow Muslims play in US society in the wake of 9/11, listeners get a sense of what it's like to be an Arab in America.
