Kavanaugh Day 2: Protests and debate continue as candidate answers senators’ questions
It’s Day 2 of the Kavanaugh confirmation hearings and they are proving just as contentious those on Day 1.
Yesterday’s meeting saw an avalanche of citizen protests. A group of women conducted a silent protest dressed as characters from the dystopian “Handmaid’s Tale,” while other attendees of the hearing demonstrated their disapproval with disruptive shouts, resulting in the arrest of 70 people by the end of the day.
Some Democrats were equally combative, arguing that the hearing should be delayed until documents regarding Kavanaugh’s nearly three year career at the White House are released (the Trump Administration is currently blocking their access).
Today, Kavanaugh faces questions about his judicial history and ability to be an independent force on the bench. Senators Charles E. Grassley of Iowa and Dianne Feinstein of California began the day’s session by pressing the candidate’s views on abortion and guns rights.
