Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger
Host Larry Mantle speaks with the Governor of California about statewide election issues as well as his support of President Bush.
Proposition 1A
If passed, Proposition 1A would ensure that local property tax and sales tax revenues remain with local government, safeguarding funding for public safety, health, and local public services. Dennis Downs, Fire Chief of the Pasadena Fire Department and member of the board of the California League of Cities, joins Larry to discuss the Proposition.
Measure A: “The Public Safety and Homeland Security Act.”
If it passes, Measure A would raise the LA County sales tax by a half percent, from 8.25% to 8.75%. Proponents say that the almost $500 million in revenue would be used to add more sheriffs and city police, expand community policing, strengthen youth and adult crime prevention programs, and more. Opponents say that there is no good reason to raise the sales tax and that existing revenues should be enough to provide for public safety. Critics also say that some of the funds could be diverted to give cops salary hikes and bigger pensions, and that not enough of the money raised would go to youth prevention programs. Rick Taylor, Campaign consultant for Measure A, and partner at Dakota Communications, and Tony Bell, Assistant Chief Deputy for LA County Supervisor Mike Antonovich, join host Larry Mantle to discuss the issue.
After Yasser: Succession in the Palestinian Authority
Yasser Arafat is gravely ill. In light of this, Larry discusses what might happen next in Gaza and the West Bank. Joining him is Zvi Vapni, Deputy Consul General for the Israeli Consulate in Los Angeles; Diana Buttu, Canadian-born, Palestinian lawyer who is a legal advisor to the PLO; Rabbi Gary Greenebaum, Western Regional Director of the American Jewish Committee, and Mahmoud Ibrahim, PhD., Professor of History at Cal Poly Pomona.
