Federal Money Flows to Banks...Now What?

AirTalk for October 27, 2008

The Treasury Department's "Troubled Assets Relief Program" or TARP, is now starting to send money towards America's ailing banks. City National in Beverly Hills is one recipient: it will receive a $395-million infusion. Will this free up the credit markets? And can it stop the slide of the world's ailing economies?

McCain And Obama's Sprint to the Finish

AirTalk for October 27, 2008

John McCain continues to lag in the polls--he's fighting to hold onto key swing states such as Ohio and Florida to try and achieve that magic 270 number in electoral votes. Obama, meanwhile, is exploiting his huge financial advantage, and will air a 30-minute infomercial Wednesday night on CBS, Fox and NBC. Larry gets the latest on the political horse race.

Airtalk Listener Focus Group

AirTalk for October 27, 2008

Larry Mantle talks with four listeners about a variety of topics related to the 2008 Presidential Election.

Charities Feel Pinch of Economic Downturn

AirTalk for October 27, 2008

Foundations, charities, and other non-profit organizations and institutions are feeling the pinch of the economic downturn. Endowments have seen their investments shrink dramatically, and non-profits are finding fundraising much more taxing and less lucrative than in years past. The timing couldn't be worse, because the need for charitable services is greatest when people are least likely to open their wallets to pay for them. How severely has the Wall Street crisis affected philanthropy? And what can charities to do to weather the storm of recession? Larry Mantle talks with George Ruotolo of the Giving Institute and takes listener calls.

The Unmentionable World of Human Waste and why it Matters

AirTalk for October 27, 2008

Bodily waste is something common to all and as natural as breathing, yet we prefer not to talk about it. In her new book "The Big Necessity," Rose George argues that we should talk about it because population growth is taxing even the most advanced sewage systems, and the disease spread by waste kills more people worldwide every year than any other single cause of death. Even in America, 1.95 million people have no access to an indoor toilet. Yet the subject remains unmentionable. Larry and author Rose George discuss a subject that so often gets brushed aside in public-policy debates, the problem of human waste.
