The Passing Of Former Congressman Ed Roybal
When he was elected to the House of Representatives in 1962, Ed Roybal became the first Hispanic legislator that California had sent to Congress in some 80 years. By his retirement in 1992, Roybal had sworn in the first Hispanic member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in more than 100 years and had helped bring down racial barriers throughout the State. Guest-host John Rabe discusses Roybal’s legacy with Congressman Xavier Becerra, State Senator Gloria Romero, and Fernando Guerra, a political science professor at Loyola Marymount.
Measure Y – LAUSD School Bonds
The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has placed Measure Y, a nearly $4 billion dollar school bond measure, on the November 2005 ballot. If passed, the district hopes it will fulfill its goal of returning all schools to a two-semester calendar, end involuntary busing, and ensure that every community receives its fair share of new schools and classrooms. Opponents point to LAUSD’s declining enrollment and say Measure Y will increase LA’s tax burden even more. Guest-host John Rabe discusses the measure with LAUSD superintendent Roy Romer and Richard Close, President of the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association, who opposes the new bonds.
