Will The Courts Decide The Presidential Election?

AirTalk for October 25, 2004

Host Larry Mantle discusses a new Time magazine poll that finds a majority of registered voters (58%) say they are either “very worried” or “somewhat worried” that the courts may have to decide the outcome of the presidential election. Only about half of these voters (54%) trust the courts to do this, and about 41% do not trust the courts. What do you think? Are you concerned that this election will be decided by the courts? Maybe that doesn’t bother you? Why or why not? Larry talks with Mark Schulman, founder and president of SRBI. Mr. Schulman is the main pollster for TIME magazine.

The Immigration Platforms Of Bush And Kerry

AirTalk for October 25, 2004

Experts join Host Larry Mantle to discuss the immigration platforms of the Bush and Kerry campaigns. President Bush has beefed-up border security, adding more agents, helicopters and video surveillance to police the U.S. border. He has also doubled funding for the inspections of business to see if they have hired undocumented workers. The President also wants to create a temporary work permit for workers to be in the U.S. legally. Senator Kerry would pass an AgJobs bill, giving rights to agricultural workers. He also will create a temporary worker visa program and strengthen border security. Perhaps most controversially, the Kerry immigration platform would have “earned legalization,” something that would give a path to citizenship to undocumented workers who have worked and paid taxes in the U.S. for 5 years. Larry talks with Greg Jacobs, deputy policy director for the Bush-Cheney campaign, and Raj Goyle, senior domestic policy analyst at the Center for American Progress.
