Secretary of State Kevin Shelley's Alleged Ethical Lapses and County Clerks Criticisms of Shelley's Election Preparations

AirTalk for October 21, 2004

Critics of Secretary of State Kevin Shelley allege that he fiddled with a grant won for a community group, channeling some of it into his 2002 campaign for secretary of state. He is also accused of using his staff to collect and process campaign contributions. Larry Mantle discusses Kevin Shelley’s political woes with Dan Walters, political columnist for the Sacramento Bee. Then, California’s election officials contend that Secretary of State Kevin Shelley has not implemented federal plans (HAVA--Help America Vote Act, 2002) designed to avert problems like the ones seen in the 2000 Florida election. Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder Connie McCormak and Assistant Secretary of State Marc Carrel join Host Larry Mantle to discuss the issue.

Polling Iraqis

AirTalk for October 21, 2004

Polling is a tricky business in the best of circumstances, but polling Iraqis in Iraq is a challenge of a different kind. Larry Mantle speaks with Steven Moore, founder of “The Truth About Iraq.org,” a non-profit group working to show that Iraqis are more optimistic than Americans think they are, Hala Kotb, Director of International Marketing and Communications for Zogby International, and Richard Brukholder, director of international polling at Gallup. These organizations have polled Iraqis, trying to gauge what they think about democracy, Saddam Hussein, the Interim government and when American forces should leave.
