Wine in California

AirTalk for October 15, 2003

California is more than halfway through the fall grape harvest. Charles Sullivan, noted viticulture historian, and Steve Riboli, owner of the San Antonio Winery in Los Angeles, join Host Larry Mantle to discuss California's wine industry. Due to a planting boom, there has been a much-publicized grape glut, causing some Central Valley growers to pull up their vines and pursue other crops. Steve Riboli discusses his family business, the San Antonio Winery, the last functional, independent winery in Los Angeles. Did you know that Los Angeles used to have over 100 bonded wineries, many located along the LA River? Also, Charles Sullivan discusses THE California grape, Zinfandel. His new book is called Zinfandel: A History of A Grape and Its Wine (UC Press).
