Zoning for health? City plans to regulate fast food in South LA

The issue of having too much fast food and too few healthy choices in South Los Angeles has been discussed for years. But now that a temporary ban on new free-standing fast-food restaurants has expired, permanent regulations are being considered. A plan approved unanimously yesterday by the Los Angeles Planning Commission, is now headed to the City Council’s planning committee. Councilwoman Jan Perry, who represents the area, says it’s about correcting an imbalance and more healthy choices are needed. But the California Restaurant Association opposes the measure as an unnecessary burned on business. Does South LA need permanent regulations in order to attract more full-service, healthy food options? Or is this just another nanny-state move?

Writing Hereafter

What comes in the next life? What’s my purpose? The big questions dominate Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter, opening this week in Los Angeles. Peter Morgan penned the screenplay. At least one critic says the story ambitiously offers an alternative to organized religion. Meanwhile, Morgan is also at work on a biopic of rock legend Freddie Mercury, to be portrayed by Borat’s Sacha Baron Cohen. Peter Morgan joins Larry in this life.

Guest:

Peter Morgan, screenwriter, Hereafter. Nominated for two Academy Awards, for The Queen in 2007 and for Frost/Nixon in 2009.
