Afghanistan: Can We Still Win?

AirTalk for October 13, 2008

A draft of the National Intelligence Estimate says that the war in Afghanistan is going increasingly badly. The country is in a "downward spiral" into violence and chaos. Now some NATO commanders are saying the war can't be won and the only answer is to find and install a US-friendly dictator and make peace with the Taliban. How did the situation get so bad? And what should the U.S. and its NATO allies do now? Larry speaks with Thomas H. Johnson, professor of National Security Affairs at the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, and Fred Kagan, resident scholar at AEI about this dire situation.

Witch-Hunting Past And Present

AirTalk for October 13, 2008

Larry talks with author John Demos about his new book, "The Enemy Within: 2,000 Years of Witch-Hunting in the Western World." Demos provides an historical examination of this phenomenon that began in the European Dark-ages, long before the trials in Salem, Massachusetts. He says this desire to rid the world of "evil" is not something of the past. He cites modern day examples and details the physical and psychological harm used again and again on those who are targeted.
