LA USD Votes on Ambassador Hotel High School Project

AirTalk for October 12, 2004

Los Angeles school board member David Tokofsky says he has a last-minute proposal to preserve more of the historic Ambassador Hotel than the plan offered by LAUSD Superintendent Roy Romer. The Board of Education will vote on the Superintendent’s plan today, which is criticized by the LA Conservancy as not going far enough to preserve the historic hotel. School Board member David Tokofsky and Ken Bernstein, Director of Preservation Issues, LA Conservancy, join Host Larry Mantle to discuss the issue.

Propositions 60 & 62

AirTalk for October 12, 2004

Larry Mantle talks with the proponents and opponents of Propositions 60 and 62. Proposition 62 would create an “open primary system,” for California statewide elections. If the measure passes, only the top two vote-getters in the primary, regardless of political affiliation, would advance to the general election. A vote for Proposition 60 would keep the California’s current election system. Currently, a spot is reserved in the general election for the top vote-getter of each of California’s seven political parties. Joining Larry to debate the propositions are Kenneth McCue, Research Scientist at Caltech, and Nick Tobey, Co-Chair of Californians for an Open Primary.

The Economic Plans of Bush and Kerry

AirTalk for October 12, 2004

Experts Max Sowickey, economist for the Economic Policy Institute, and Rea Hederman, economist at the Heritage Foundation, join Host Larry Mantle to discuss the economic policies of the Bush and Kerry campaigns.

Charter Reform In Los Angeles

AirTalk for October 12, 2004

Professor of Political Science at CSU Fullerton, Raphael Sonenshein joins Host Larry Mantle to discuss the convoluted charter reform movement in the City government of Los Angeles. Charter reformers had to revise the charter of LA in the face of a threatening secession movement, working to address the weak role of mayor and the call for more citizen participation. What began as a civic reform, turned into a major political battle for public opinion and votes. Professor Sonenshein’s new book is called The City at Stake: Secession, Reform, and the Battle for Los Angeles (Princeton).
