Los Angeles County health officials Friday scrapped their proposal to close the obstetric, pediatric and neonatal wards at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center after belatedly discovering that the move would have cost them $29 million in government funding. Some locals welcome the future development. Others fear it will destroy the charm of the area. Larry talks to Rusty Gregory, Chairman and Chief Executive for Mammoth Mountain, Rick Wood, Mayor of Mammoth Lakes, and Therese Hankel, Mammoth Lakes attorney and former planning commissioner about this coming transformation.

Poverty And Race In New Orleans

AirTalk for October 11, 2005

In a recent Wall Street Journal opinion piece, American Enterprise Institute scholar Charles Murray advanced the theory that the lawlessness seen in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina was caused by the failure of government to address root problems. He argues that without a family support structure, no amount of funding can possibly fix poverty or decrease criminality in the long term. Larry Mantle explores this argument with Baton Rouge NAACP President Kwame Asante and Joe Hicks, a social critic and vice president of Community Advocates, a non-traditional human and civil rights organization.

Julius Shulman

AirTalk for October 11, 2005

Larry Mantle talks with internationally renowned Los Angeles photographer Julius Shulman, whose iconic images helped to define modern architecture. Julius Shulman’s professional career began in late 1930’s when he developed a partnership with Richard Neutra. He went on to photograph the works of many other visionary mid-century modern architects like Rudolph Schindler, Ray Lautner and Pierre Koenig. The Getty Museum acquired the archive of over 260 thousand of Shulman’s photographs this summer, and an exhibition of some of his finest images opens at the Getty today. Larry also talks with the exhibition’s curator Wim de Wit. The exhibition, called Julius Shulman, Modernity and the Metropolis, opens today at the Getty Center and runs through January 22nd.
