House Speaker John Boehner announced a proposal this morning that would extend the government's ability to borrow money through mid-November. Will Senate Democrats accept that proposal? And October is National Dyslexia Awareness Month. We'll talk to Harvey Hubbell, who himself is dyslexic and directed 'Dislecksia: The Movie,' which is being released this weekend. Then, Gov. Jerry Brown signed the Trust Act yesterday. We'll talk about that and other new immigration-related laws in California. And later, we'll discuss the University of Minnesota's head football coach Jerry Kill, who suffers from epilepsy.

Is a budget deal on the horizon?

Is a budget deal on the horizon?

In a press conference this morning House Speaker John Boehner unveiled a proposal for a six-week extension of the debt limit. The White House, in a statement, said congress needs to pass a clean debt-limit increase and funding bill to reopen the government. The conditions of the proposal are still unclear.

What does this mean for shuttered government agencies?  Is Boehner’s proposal a step in the right direction? And if this proposal is accepted, does this mean we’ll see a similar fight in six- weeks?

'Dislecksia: The Movie' explores how dyslexic people learn

According to the International Dyslexia Association, one in 10 people have symptoms of the language-based learning disorder that can make tasks like reading, writing and spelling difficult for those affected.

“Dislecksia: The Movie” explores how dyslexic individuals learn, and what can be done to revolutionize education. The filmmakers consult with experts, doctors and advocates to gain insight into what’s it like to live with dyslexia and the different challenges faced by those who have it.

Directed by Harvey Hubbell V, who is dyslexic himself, the film also features Billy Bob Thornton and Joe Pantoliano. Hubbell’s film delves into the complex issues surrounding dyslexia and paints a vivid picture of a learning disorder that sculpts the lives of those who struggle against it.

Do you or someone you know have dyslexia? How have you dealt with it?

Guests:

Harvey Hubbell, Emmy-winning documentarian and director of “Disleksia: The Movie”

Lainie Donnell, educational therapist and President, Los Angeles Branch of the International Dyslexia Association

Gov. Brown signs ‘Trust Act’ and other immigration-related laws in California

Governor Jerry Brown signed the ‘Trust Act’ yesterday, which prohibits the LAPD and other local law enforcement agencies from detaining people for deportation if they are arrested for a misdemeanor.

The bill is one of a number of immigration-related laws the governor signed in the last couple of weeks, including one that would provide special driver’s licenses for undocumented Californians. The governor, however, vetoed a bill that would have let non-citizens serve on juries. Here to tell us more about the immigration-related bills that the governor signed--and did not sign--is KPCC’s Leslie Berestein Rojas.

Minnesota football coach's public battle with epilepsy seizures and stigma

Minnesota football coach's public battle with epilepsy seizures and stigma

The University of Minnesota's football coach, Jerry Kill, missed his team's game day last weekend due to an epileptic seizure. It's the second time this season Coach Kill suffered a game-day seizure, but the first time he missed an entire game.

Defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys stepped in as acting coach. After Minnesota's win on Saturday, Claeys explained, "We have been through a lot of battles together.... We miss him here as a friend. We are all pretty much used to this, and so are the kids."

When Minnesota hired the top-performing coach they knew he suffered from epilepsy. In his three seasons with the school, Kill has had five seizures on the same day as a game. Local sports columnists have not be as kind as Kill's team - some have called for him to step down arguing his epilepsy hurts the team and his seizures create an unsightly spectacle.

More than three million Americans live with epilepsy. Depending on their exact condition, the vast majority are able to live fully functional lives thanks to medication and/or diet. Lifestyle can also affect epilepsy - for some, stressful situations are an aggravating factor. However, for some very driven individuals with epilepsy a lack of stress can be just as aggravating.

Is coaching a "Big Ten" team too high-stakes for Coach Kill or is it a good fit for a natural leader? How much of coaching is what happens behind the scenes as opposed to on the field? What advances have been made in epilepsy research to help people manage their disease?
