MAYOR’S EDUCATION PROPOSALS
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa yesterday announced a new set of proposals for improving L.A.’s public schools. In addition to suggesting specific measures, the mayor reiterated his intention to increase the role of the mayor’s office in governing the LAUSD. Larry Mantle discusses the proposals, and the larger ramifications of Villaraigosa’s plan, with education professionals.
UNION DUES, POLITICS AND PROP 75
The November 8th special election ballot includes a measure proposed by business and conservative Republicans that would require public employee unions to get permission from workers before spending dues for political purposes. Proponents call it the “Paycheck Protection” initiative while labor unions call it “Paycheck Deception.” Whatever you call it, Proposition 75 is considered a major threat to labor's clout in the Capitol. Larry speaks with State Senator Tom McClintock and Pat McOsker, President of the Los Angeles City Firefighters.
