Union Eligibility At Risk; Proposition 83; Too Old To Drive?; Affluent, But Unhappy, Teens
Union Eligibility At Risk
The National Labor Relations Board has broadened the definition of supervisors, potentially exempting millions of workers from legal protection to join unions. The labor relations board ruled that nurses who regularly run shifts at health care facilities should be considered supervisors and be exempt from federal protections that cover union membership. The decision Tuesday potentially has major implications for workers in other fields as well, bringing cries of protest from organized labor and sharp criticism from a former chairman of the National Labor Relations Board.
Proposition 83
Larry and his guests discuss the pros and cons of Proposition 83, which will appear on the November ballot. Nicknamed "Jessica's Law," the measure would toughen penalties and place new restrictions on where convicted sexual offenders can live. Prop 83 would also mandate longer sentences for sexual predators and would require them to wear GPS tracking devices for life.
Too Old To Drive?
In November, 1998 a 96 year old driver plowed through a pedestrian walkway in Santa Monica, killing 15 year old Brandi Joy Mitock. That was nearly five years before 86-year old George Weller drove through the Santa Monica Farmers' Market, killing 10 people and injuring more than 60. California drivers older than 70 must renew their licenses in person but are not required to take road tests. Advocates for seniors have opposed any legislation that would require special driver testing based on age. All Central California drivers, regardless of age, will take new DMV tests under a pilot program that begins in January. The battery of tests is meant to identify risky drivers, regardless of age. Larry and his guests discuss the pros and cons of tighter licensing of senior motorists.
Affluent, But Unhappy, Teens
Numerous studies show that privileged adolescents are experiencing epidemic rates of depression, anxiety disorders, and substance abuse - rates that are higher than those of any other socioeconomic group of young people in this country. Larry talks with Madeline Levine, who has spent 25 years as a psychologist specializing in adolescents, about her new book, The Price of Privilege.
