Does It Matter If Iraq Is In A Civil War?

AirTalk for November 30, 2006

NBC and the Los Angeles Times are now calling the conflict in Iraq a civil war. The Bush administration, however, is still careful to avoid this phrase. So is it sectarian violence, an insurgency, controlled chaos, a conflict on the brink of a civil war, a civil war, or some combination? Certainly, the monthly death tolls are comparable to those in past conflicts that were called "civil war," such as the Lebanese civil war and even the American civil war. But what do these distinctions really mean? And how does the nomenclature impact American foreign policy?

Director Stephen Frears

AirTalk for November 30, 2006

Larry talks with the acclaimed British film director, Stephen Frears, about his career and his most recent film The Queen, starring Helen Mirren. Frear's first film was the 1972 Gumshoe. But it was his production of the one-off drama My Beautiful Launderette for BBC 4 in 1985 that led to his notice as a capable film director when the production was released theatrically to great acclaim. His other films include Mrs. Henderson Presents, High Fidelity, Dirty Pretty Things and Dangerous Liaisons.
