Magellan's Circumnavigation Of The Globe

AirTalk for November 27, 2003

Historian Laurence Bergreen joins Host Larry Mantle to tell the tale of the greatest maritime voyage of discovery, Ferdinand Magellan's circumnavigation of the globe, from 1519-1522. It has been over a hundred years since someone told the story of Magellan's voyage. Laurence Bergreen makes good use of the plethora of information surrounding this famous trip. The diaries, captain's log, memoirs and court records chronicle a harrowing sea adventure on which half of the sailors died, including Magellan himself. Tasked with finding a route to the Spice Islands, Magellan and his crew braved the high seas and indulged themselves in a few orgies and battles along the way.
