What About Coal?

AirTalk for November 22, 2006

We need more power in Southern California. But where do we get it? Every type of power generation has upsides and downsides. Coal is abundant and relatively inexpensive, but it increases CO2 emissions and doesn't burn as cleanly as gas. Meanwhile, utilities of five California cities, including LA and Pasadena, purchase 75 percent of the electric power generated by the coal-burning Intermountain Power Plant in Utah. The California cities also help pay the mortgage of upgrades to the plant. The Pasadena City Council has yet to decide whether to extend contracts for coal power from Intermountain. Larry and his guests discuss the pros and cons of coal-burning power plants.

Single Sex Education

AirTalk for November 22, 2006

Federal Title IX restrictions are being loosened as of this Friday, paving the way for single-sex classrooms in public schools. Some studies maintain that single-sex learning provides benefits to students, but feminist organizations and the ACLU are strongly opposed to the modifications, saying they turn back the clock on thirty years of progress. Larry and his guests discuss the pros and cons of single sex education, and the potential pitfalls of relaxing the regulations.

In his new book, The Longevity Solution, Dr. Gary Small explores how to live longer, stronger, better lives. Larry talks with Small about the guidelines he suggests including a positive attitude, gratifying relationships, and lifelong education.
