Developments In The LAUSD
Larry speaks with KPCC’s education reporter, Adolfo Guzman Lopez, about recent developments at Belmont High School. Mayor Villaraigosa, Supt. Romer, and others say, there's a new, concentrated effort to help Belmont students. Adolfo also discusses the LAUSD’s tentative agreement with the UTLA on a wage increase for teachers and today’s school board vote on how to fund a new performing and visual arts high school in downtown L.A.
Changes In LAUSD Governance
In three speeches and an interview last week, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa reiterated his intention to seize control of the Los Angeles Unified School District. Accusing the teachers’ union and school board members of impeding crucial reform, the Mayor stridently condemned the present state of education in LA’s public schools, confusing and possibly alienating traditional allies among teachers and educators. Larry Mantle talks with guests about what Mayoral control of the LAUSD would mean and what the political fallout of a possible such a takeover would be. Guests include Diane Ravitch, Senior Researcher and Professor of Education at NYU, Marlene Canter, President of the Los Angeles Unified School District, A.J. Duffy, President of UTLA, United Teachers of Los Angeles, and David Abel, Publisher, Editor-In-Chief of the The Planning Report.
Will The Angels Leave Anaheim?
Larry Mantle discusses the possibility that Arte Moreno, owner of the Los Angeles Angels, might move the team to another location if the city of Anaheim does not stop pressuring him with lawsuits about his lease with the city. Larry talks with Bill Shaikin, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer.
Educating Gifted Children
Gifted children can be neglected by school systems that offer one-size-fits-all educations, and by teachers who tend to spend their extra time with remedial learners. But can smart kids be given too much attention? Can they be over-scheduled, over-praised, over-pressured, and expected to grow up much too soon? Larry Mantle talks with USC Professor Sandra Kaplan, Tufts University Professor David Henry Feldman about how to best educate precocious children.
Elia Kazan
Larry Mantle talks with Time film critic Richard Schickel about his new book Elia Kazan: A Biography.
