Irene Pepperberg, an associate research professor at Brandeis University, made some of the biggest advances in the field of animal cognition with her star pupil, an African Grey parrot named Alex. Over a 30-year period Dr. Pepperberg taught Alex to recognize and name colors and shapes, to count and to use more than 100 English words. Larry talks with Pepperberg about how her work with Alex redefined the limits of animal cognition and communication.
