African Americans Attitudes Split Along Class Lines
Blacks in America continue to have problems rising up the economic ladder. Historically this was blamed on societal ills and racial discrimination. But a new survey from Pew Research shows that attitudes are changing, and most Black Americans now see individual failings as the major factor in the achievement gap. Larry talks with social critics and pollsters about the research and what it says about race relations in America.
Achievement Gap Summit
Research shows that though large percentages of all children fall short of state education standards, the academic achievement gap is wider for some groups. English learners, students whose parents did not graduate from high school, African Americans, Latinos, and economically disadvantaged children are further behind than White and Asian students. The California Department of Education is holding a two-day conference focusing on the achievement gap in California schools. Larry talks with Jack O'Connell, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, about the forum.

Administration Of Torture
When Americans first saw the disturbing images of torture at Abu Ghraib, the Bush Administration said it was as an isolated incident. However, in their new book, Administration of Torture, ACLU litigators Jameel Jaffer and Amrit Singh make the case that beatings, burnings, dog attacks, and other forms of inhumane treatment are commonplace in American detention centers in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay. Larry talks with Jaffer about what he and Singh uncovered in their investigation.
