Banning The "N" Word

AirTalk for November 7, 2007

City Councilman and former police chief Bernard Parks has introduced a symbolic resolution calling on Los Angeles residents to stop using the "N-word." In addition calling on Angelinos to edit the word out of everyday language, the nonbinding resolution asks residents "to encourage all others whom they may encounter in their daily routine to cease from using the word as well." Parks said he proposed the measure partly because of recent situations carrying racial overtones, including noose-hanging incidents. The "N-word," "connotes a lazy person with no self-respect or regard for family, a person who is ignorant, stupid, slow moving, does not speak proper English and has childlike qualities," Parks wrote in the resolution. The City Council is scheduled to vote on it Friday. Larry Mantle talks about the idea with Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable President Earl Ofari Hutchinson and takes listener calls.

Instant Replay In Major League Baseball?

AirTalk for November 7, 2007

There's no instant replay in baseball! But there could be... MLB's General Managers voted 25-to-5 in favor of a measure that would allow instant replay to be used to help umpires make calls in specific situations. Though baseball commissioner Bud Selig opposes the use of replays, he recently said he was willing to let the GMs examine the issue. Larry talks with LA Times' baseball writer, Mike DiGiovanna, and L.A. Times sports columnist Bill Plaschke, and opens the phones for fans to weigh in on the proposed plan which needs the approval of owners, umpires, and the players' association before it can be implemented.
