Governor Proposes 10% Budget Cut and Democrats Propose New Health Plan
In an effort to balance California's budget, Governor Schwarzenegger proposed a 10% budget cut Monday. The proposal would mean cuts to many state programs, including healthcare and education. In related news, Democrats outlined a new healthcare plan Monday, part of which would involve raising the tobacco tax by $2 a pack. Larry discusses the latest happenings from the state legislature with LA Times Staff Writer Evan Halper, Deputy Director of External Affairs for Governor Schwarzenegger, H.D. Palmer, and Democratic State Assemblyman, Fabian Nunez.
California Ready to Tackle Tailpipe Emissions
Governor Schwarzenegger is expected to sue the Environmental Protection Agency this week in order to allow California to regulate tailpipe emissions from passenger vehicles sold here. If the Governor succeeds, California may be able to force manufacturers to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions from cars, SUVs and light trucks sold in the state. Many other states are in the process of taking similar actions, so the repercussions of the lawsuit could be huge. Larry talks with David D. Doniger of the Natural Resources Defense Council, Kenneth Green of the American Enterprise Institute, and Mary Nichols of the California Air Resources Board.
One Year Away! Presidential Campaign Overview
A new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll released Monday shows that Hillary Clinton and Rudy Giuliani continue to be the leading candidates of their respective parties. Larry takes a look at the current state of presidential election campaigns with democratic political consultant, Chris Lehane, and Republican political strategist Dan Schnur.
