The Orange Line

AirTalk for November 3, 2005

The San Fernando Valley busway, an exclusive, bus-only lane that runs from North Hollywood to Warner Center, was built by paving over an abandoned rail line. It was billed as light rail without the costs and complexities, but the newly opened line has already been involved in three traffic accidents, including two yesterday which resulted in injuries. Some blame reckless motorists—yesterday’s accidents were caused by motorists running red lights—but that doesn’t matter much to injured bus riders. Bus advocates are calling for railroad-like crossing gates to come down whenever the buses pass an intersection, although there are questions as to whether this is technically feasible. For now, MTA has ordered buses down to 10 miles per hour at every intersection, which is sure to take the rapid out of this mode of “rapid” transit. Larry discusses these issues with Roger Snoble, Chief Executive Officer of the MTA.
