Gay Parents Rights In Dispute; Tejon Ranch Preserve; Rethinking the The War on Drugs and a Prop 36 Update
Gay Parents Rights In Dispute
The California Supreme Court heard arguments Tuesday in three cases involving disputes between estranged lesbian mates over children. Larry talks with Jennifer Pizer, Senior Counsel, LAMBDA Legal Defense Fund about this issue.
Tejon Ranch Preserve
The Tejon Ranch Company and the Trust for Public Land have announced an agreement to create a one-hundred-thousand acre land preserve. The preserve will be the size of Yosemite Valley, leaving in place a wildlife corridor connecting the Sierra Nevadas with Southern California. The State of California will purchase the land, which makes up one third of Tejon Ranch, and part of the remaining land will be set aside for development. Larry Mantle talks with experts including Barry Zoeller , Vice President of Corporate Communications for the Tejon Ranch Company, Reed Holderman, Executive Director of the Trust for Public Land, a national, nonprofit land conservation organization, and Kassie Siegel, staff attorney for the Center for Biological Diversity, a science-based non-profit conservation organization.
Rethinking the The War on Drugs and a Prop 36 Update
Has the “war on drugs” been effective? A new study by the RAND Corporation concludes that it has, and it hasn’t. The study evaluated the effectiveness, costs and consequences of U.S. drug policies over the past 20 years and recommends a new anti-drug strategy. Larry Mantle talks with co-author Martin Iguchi. Also, it's been nearly four years since Proposition 36 went into effect. The initiative, which was passed overwhelmingly by California voters, gives drug offenders the option of drug treatment rather than jail time. Larry talks with Anna Maria Luna, Judge of Los Angeles Supreme Court and Chair of the Prop 36 Implementation Task Force, Doug Longshore, Principal investigator for the Integrated Substance Abuse Programs at UCLA which evaluates the progress of Prop 36, and Judge Jim Gray, Superior Court of Orange County.
