Sheriff Lee Baca
Larry Mantle talks with LA County Sheriff Lee Baca about the announcement that he will halt the early release of certain inmates from its overcrowded jails to keep those with violent pasts behind bars longer.
International Trade-Off?
The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have become the leading gateway for trade between the United States and Asia. According to a new study released Wednesday by the LA Economic Development Corporation, international trade over the next 20 years is expected to triple. The record trade could be good for the local economy, but it might also lead to increased traffic and pollution in areas surrounding the ports. Host Larry Mantle discusses the boon in international trade and examines the implications in conversation with James C. Hankla, Vice President of the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners, Melissa Lin Perrella, Staff Attorney at the NRDC, and Jack Kyser, Chief Economist of the LAEDC, who authored the study.
Race for Attorney General
Edmund G. "Jerry" Brown, three-time presidential candidate, former Governor of California, current mayor of Oakland, is one of two candidates running for the Democratic nomination for Attorney General in the June primaries. He faces Los Angeles City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo. Host Larry Mantle talks with Brown about his bid to become the state's top law enforcement official.
Immigration Debate Continues In Washington
The United States Senate is scheduled to vote this week on a complex immigration reform bill that would offer a path to legalization for many undocumented immigrants as well as a guest worker program. The House has already passed an enforcement-only bill that makes illegal immigrants felons, cracks down on hiring of illegal immigrants and steps up border security. Larry Mantle talks with San Francisco Chronicle correspondent Carolyn Lochhead for an update on the immigration debate.
US/Israel Relations Update
Ehud Olmert is in the midst of his first visit to Washington since being elected Prime Minister of Israel. He is addressing a joint session of Congress Wednesday. Though President Bush praised Olmert's plan to redraw the West Bank's borders, he stopped short of giving it his full endorsement. Larry talks with Steven Cook, from the Council of Foreign Relations, about the current state of US/Israeli relations. Then he talks with Congressmen Henry Waxman and Xavier Becerra about the House vote to end aid to the Palestinian government.
