Sacramento And The Future Of The LAUSD

AirTalk for May 22, 2006

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has taken his case to takeover control of the LAUSD to the Capital. Though he has the support of Governor Schwarzenegger and Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, not everyone in Sacramento is in favor of a change in how the LAUSD is governed. Larry and his guests discuss the status of legislation to carry out Villaraigosa's plan and the politics of turning the Mayor's proposal into law.

Mayoral Takeovers In Other U.S. Cities

AirTalk for May 22, 2006

The LAUSD, the nation's second-largest school district, is currently run by an elected seven-member board. Mayor Villaraigosa's reform proposal borrows some ideas from other large urban school districts that moved to a system of Mayoral control in the 1990's. Larry and his guests talk about how the system of mayoral appointees went into effect, and is working, in Chicago, Boston, New York, and Cleveland.

Extending The School Calendar

AirTalk for May 22, 2006

Mayor Villaraigosa would like to extend the LAUSD school calendar to provide students with more hours of instruction. Citing that American students spend less time in school than their peers in many other developed countries, he has proposed extending either the school day or the school year. Larry Mantle talks with UCLA Education Professor Jeannie Oakes and LAUSD School Board member David Tokofsky about what this would cost, and how much students would benefit.
