President Bush's Immigration Speech Analysis

AirTalk for May 16, 2006

President Bush said Monday night he will order as many as 6,000 National Guard troops to the U.S. border with Mexico to help stop the flood of illegal immigrants, part of an administration drive to win conservative support in Congress for an election-year overhaul of the nation's tattered immigration laws. "We do not yet have full control of the border and I am determined to change that," the president said in a 17-minute prime-time address from the Oval Office. Bush gave strong support to a plan that would give many of the 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States an eventual chance of citizenship, a move derided by some conservatives as amnesty. The president rejected that term.

Commencement Speakers Boycott Graduation Ceremonies

AirTalk for May 16, 2006

Since November, custodians at UC Berkeley have urged the university's Chancellor to raise their poverty-level wages. The Chancellor's refusal to do so caused the recent cancellation of commencement addresses by Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean, California Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, State Senator Liz Figueroa, Assemblywoman Carol Liu, and U.S. Congressman Dennis Kucinich. Larry opens the phones to talk with listeners about the boycott.

San Bernardino's Anti-Immigration Proposal

AirTalk for May 16, 2006

A measure created by an anti-immigration group in the city of San Bernardino which would impose stiff penalties on citizens who hire or rent to illegal immigrants was voted down by the City Council last night. Now the measure will be voted on by the citizens in a special election. San Bernardino is one of a growing number of U.S. cities with citizens who are dissatisfied with the federal government's enforcement of immigration law, and that seek to take it into their own hands. Larry Mantle and his guests discuss last night's vote and the legislation.

Immigrant Voter Drive

AirTalk for May 16, 2006

Larry and his guests discuss the new national campaign to encourage documented immigrants to become citizens and register to vote. The goal of the campaign is to produce one million new citizens and voters by the November mid-term elections.

Truth in Documentary Film Making

AirTalk for May 16, 2006

Does the truth matter in documentary film making? What is the nature of historic truth, and can it be captured in film? How do we discern bias in film making, and can documentary films ever be neutral? Larry Mantle speaks with guests about questions at the heart if journalism and documentary film making.
