Violence at Immigration Demonstrations

AirTalk for May 3, 2007

Larry and his guests continue the discussion on the LAPD's violent response to the May Day immigration rally at McArthur Park. Joining Larry are Los Angeles City Councilman Jack Weiss and Joe Domanick, Sr. Fellow in Criminal Justice at the USC Annenberg Institute for Justice and Journalism.

Historic Restaurants in Los Angeles

AirTalk for May 3, 2007

Beverly Hills' popular and historic tiki bar and restaurant, Trader Vic's, has closed. The restaurant has joined the ranks of LA's other deceased haunts, like the Derby, Chasen's and Perino's. Larry Mantle hosts a Trader Vic's memorial service, and waxes nostalgic with Chris Nichols, Associate editor of Los Angeles Magazine and President of the Southern California Historical Restaurant Society, and with listeners about Trader Vic's, and other beloved former LA eateries.

Post-Veto Iraq Spending

AirTalk for May 3, 2007

The showdown between the Congress and the President over deadlines for an Iraqi withdrawal is over, at least for now. The spending bill was vetoed and congress doesn't have the votes to override. So now congressional leaders are now meeting with the President's chief of staff to hammer out a compromise spending proposal for the war. Will it involve benchmarks for the Iraqi government? How will it be sculpted? Joining Larry to talk about the next step is Republican Congressman John Campbell from Orange County, and Ron Elving, Senior Washington Editor at NPR.

Ask A Mexican

AirTalk for May 3, 2007

About 25 million people of Mexican descent live in the United States, accounting for more than half of the country's Latinos and seven percent of the total population. But for many Americans, the behaviors and customs of the country's fastest-growing ethnic group remain misunderstood. Larry speaks with author and Orange County reporter Gustavo Arellano about his latest book Ask a Mexican! (Scribner), which addresses the plight of the Mexican immigrant, as well as explaining the cultural phenomenon that remains mysterious to many Americans.
