Violence At Immigration Demonstrations; The End Of Glasnost?; China's Challenge To America
Violence At Immigration Demonstrations
Yesterday's May Day immigration rally at Los Angeles' MacArthur Park turned violent--witnesses say demonstrators threw rocks and bottles and police responded with rubber bullets and batons. Fire officials say about ten people were taken by ambulance to hospitals. Several reporters were also hurt, including KPCC's Patricia Nazario. Larry talks with Telemundo's Maria Garcia, Royal Oakes of the Radio Television and News Association of Southern California, and Patricia Nazario, who talked about her injuries.
The End Of Glasnost?
Glasnost, or openness, was the signature word of Michael Gorbachev, who fought to open the press and civic participation in the old Soviet Union. But in today's Russia, under the leadership of President Vladimir Putin, things are no longer working out that way. The Kremlin has returned to controlling what the Russian News Service can talk about and this has caused tensions with the U.S. Larry talks with experts about this threat to US-Russian relations.
China's Challenge To America
It's a nightmare scenario: two nuclear super-powers in open warfare. Given such contentious issues as Taiwan, competition for oil, and North Korea, some political analysts think a conflict between China and the United States is almost inevitable. And given China's dramatic and seemingly unstoppable growth, it's already a hugely powerful nation and an enormous rival to American power. How will this complex relationship play out on the world stage? Larry discusses the scenarios with Michael O'Hanlon, analyst, Brookings scholar, and writer of A War Like No Other: The Truth About China's Challenge to America.
