Liquified Natural Gas Terminal in Long Beach?

AirTalk for March 31, 2005

A legal battle is being waged between federal and state agencies, business groups and environmentalists over the possible building of controversial liquid natural gas import terminal in Long Beach. Proponents of liquified natural gas, or LNG, say a local terminal is crucially needed to prevent future energy shortages and to mitigate rising fuel costs. Critics say a terminal would be dangerous for local residents because of the highly flammable nature of the liquid. Larry Mantle talks with Bill Kelly, Southern California correspondent for California Energy Circuit and the Natural Resources News Service, Seiichi Tsurumi, Executive Advisor to Sound Energy Solutions, the Mitsubishi Subsidiary that is proposing the Liquified Natural Gas Project in Long Beach, and Mark Massara, Director of Coastal Programs for Sierra Club.

The Silberman Report

AirTalk for March 31, 2005

The White House commissioned a report to investigate intelligence shortfalls since the attacks on September 11th, 2001. Issued today, the Silberman Report, named after Republican Laurence Silberman, said that America’s intelligence agencies were “dead wrong” about Iraqi Weapons of Mass Destruction. It recommended over seventy changes to how America gathers intelligence, including implementing an overhaul at the FBI and giving much more power to John Negroponte, the new director of National Intelligence. The report also absolves the Bush administration of manipulating any intelligence in order to go to war with Iraq. Larry Mantle discusses the Silberman report with the Honorable Ashton Carter, Co-Director of the Preventive Defense Project and a Professor of Science and International Affairs at Harvard University. He is former Assistant Secretary of Defense under the first Clinton administration, and he testified in front of the Commission.
