Update on Terry Schiavo
A federal judge refused to order the reinsertion of Terri Schiavo's feeding tube, denying an emergency request from the woman's parents. The parents' lawyer has filed an appeal with the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta. Professor of Politics at Pomona College, David Menefee Libey, and Pepperdine University School of Law Professor Douglas Kmiec join Host Larry Mantle to discuss the politicization of this case.
Driving Habits of Angelenos
“How often do Angelenos run red lights? Do Los Angeles drivers yield for pedestrians? Do LA pedestrians look both ways before crossing the street?” These are some of the questions asked by Operation Traffix, a coalition of public sector transportation agencies whose goal is to find solutions for gridlock and to reduce injuries on our roads. Dan Mitchell, transportation engineer and author of the study, joins Larry to share some of the early observations of this ongoing study about Angeleno’s driving habits. What are some of the bad driving behaviors that you have noticed? –Do you do any of them yourself?
New Pew Study Shows Significant Growth In Undocumented Immigrant Population In America
A new Pew Hispanic Center study called “Estimates of the Size and Characteristics of the Undocumented Population” shows a significant increase in the number of undocumented immigrants in the United States. The estimated number rose to 10.3 million by the end of last year, growing by about 23% between 2000 and 2004. Pew Hispanic Center demographer and Senior Research Associate Jeffrey S. Passel, who authored the study, joins Larry to talk about it. Also joining the conversation is Fernando Guerra, Associate Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for the Study of Los Angeles, at Loyola Marymount University.
Steven Bochco
