SOUTH CENTRAL FARMERS LAND DISPUTE
The City Council met today with legal advisers and citizens groups who are trying to keep a developer from converting a South Los Angeles community garden to a warehouse. The council took no action on efforts to preserve the South Central Farmers community garden after meeting in closed session with representatives from the City Attorney's Office, Harbor Department and Trust for Public Land, a park advocacy group that's been working with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to purchase the garden from developer Ralph Horowitz. The L.A. Weekly reported that the city's lawyers are reviewing whether to make Horowitz eligible for a plan allowing him to defer the capital gains on his property for at least two years if his land is purchased by the city to keep it as a garden. Larry talks with Daniel Hernandez, LA Weekly staff writer, and Tezozomac, elected representative of the South Central Farmers.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTIMS MAY BE FORCED TO TESTIFY
The Supreme Court considered Monday whether statements made by victims to 911 operators and police officers at crime scenes should be barred as evidence. The high court's ruling could affect the ability prosecute those charged in domestic violence cases when victims are unwilling to testify. Larry Mantle talks with Southwestern University Law Professor Myrna Raeder about yesterday’s arguments and the implications of the court’s ruling.
COBRA II: The Inside Story of the Invasion and Occupation of Iraq
Blending investigative journalism with a knowledge of military history the authors of the new book, Cobra II, give a new, in-depth, account of the war in Iraq. Larry talks with co-author, Michael Gordon, about their conclusions that the bitter insurgency that American and British forces confront today was not pre-ordained, and the military and political opportunities that were lost along the way.
ROMAN POLANSKI
Larry Mantle talks with critic, screenwriter and author F.X. Feeney about his new book Roman Polanski, that discusses Polanski’s Life and Art.
