Massive earthquake rocks Japan, triggering tsunami there and warnings for California’s coastal regions

A magnitude 8.9 earthquake struck off the north-east coast of Japan today, shaking buildings in Tokyo and triggering a ferocious tsunami, which killed hundreds of people. Japanese television showed aerial footage of a surreal 13-foot muddy wave that swept away ships, cars and homes. This is Japan’s largest recorded earthquake in recorded history and the world’s fifth largest since 1900, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Pressure is rising at a nuclear reactor in Japan after a cooling system failed. In the U.S., tsunami waves hit Hawaii in the early morning and the National Weather Service West Coast has issued a Tsunami Advisory for the coastal areas of Los Angeles County. Widespread inundation is not expected there, but strong currents or waves dangerous to swimmers, boats and coastal structures are possible. Flights out of Los Angeles International Airport to Japan are being canceled. We’ll get the latest on this massive quake and its aftermath in Japan and locally.
