State Prison Budget
While the governor is recommending cuts in many areas, such as health care and education, the proposed state budget shows no cuts in prison spending, currently slated at about $5.3 billion. Are we spending too much on our prisons in California? Did you know that most prison guards' starting salaries are substantially higher than those of entry-level teachers in our public school system? Joining host Larry Mantle are Lance Corcoran, spokesman for the CCPOA, the California Correctional Peace Officers' Association, and Franklin Zimring, William G. Simon Professor of Law at UC Berkeley. He has a new book coming out at the end of March, called The Contradictions of American Capital Punishment.
