Is virginity cool again?
Alfred Kinsey – the father of sexology – might be surprised by what’s NOT happening in America’s bedrooms these days. According to new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more people are keeping their clothes ON – despite what MTV’s controversial show “Skins” might lead us to believe. The sweeping survey of American sexual behavior looked at 13,500 people between the ages of 15 and 44 and found that more than one-quarter of those interviewed had never had sex. Although 97 percent of women and 98 percent of men reported “losing it” by the time they were 25, virginity seems to be making a come back. And that’s not all. It turns out more people are claiming to be monogamous, women are ‘fessing up to having more same-sex liaisons than men, and twice as many men reported having more than 15 sex partners over the course of their lives. What conclusions, if any, can be drawn from this study? What’s behind the uptick in abstinence? Are STD and teen pregnancy warnings getting through?

The quest to dissolve a city
Vernon, a 5-square-mile industrial cluster just south of downtown Los Angeles, is a city with no residents and relatively lax regulations that make it a refuge for operations like slaughterhouses and chemical plants that would face stricter oversight anywhere else in the area. Vernon also has a long history of corruption and political scandal, including a mayor who served for 50 years until being convicted of fraud and forced from office. Now California Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez is sponsoring a bill to legally abolish the city and make it a part of Los Angeles County. He and other officials argue that Vernon has prospered for too long at the expense of surrounding communities. Vernon’s city government and business leaders warn of a massive exodus of jobs should the city be de-incorporated. What’s the way forward for this odd industrial island inside LA?
