Economic Woes Continue

AirTalk for March 2, 2009

The Dow is below 7,000 for the first time since 1997 amid a bleak outlook. Federal officials have given an additional $30 billion to insurance company A.I.G. with hopes of stabilizing the company. And the number of Americans receiving unemployment benefits is above 5 million for this first time since tracking began in 1967. The woes in international trade are reflected by the drop in cargo traffic, which has dipped at some U.S. seaports by more than a third, and ports are cutting cargo rates to attract new business. Larry Mantle talks with guests Nancy Sidhu and Joseph Mason about the ramifications of our troubled economy.

Election Preview

AirTalk for March 2, 2009

Believe it or not, it's election time again--locally. City Controller, a City Council Seat, and, of course, the Mayor's seat (and more) are up tomorrow. Larry reviews what's on the ballot.

Mexico

AirTalk for March 2, 2009

Since Mexican President Felipe Calderon declared war on drug traffickers in 2007, there have been more than 7,000 drug related deaths- thousands more than the number of U.S. troop deaths in Iraq. With most of those killings occurring near the U.S. border, there is concern about the drug-related violence spilling over into the United States. Advisories also have been issued warning students on spring break about traveling to Mexico. Last month, Cancun's newly-hired security official was murdered, raising suspicion that it was carried out by an allegedly corrupt ex-police chief. Larry Mantle talks with guests about what the precarious drug-war means for our national security.

The Facebook Phenomenon

AirTalk for March 2, 2009

Facebook started out as a social networking site reserved only for college students, but now it's for everyone. Created by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004 Facebook has quickly turned into a popular cyber destination for teenagers and adults of all ages. Whether you are posting pictures, linking to published works, using it to keep in touch with friends far away, or using it to create cohesion within your company Facebook has taken on several practical uses. Boasting 175 million users the site has recently been shrouded in controversy for its change in content provisions - having users question who really owns the content of their Facebook page? Larry talks to Greg Atwan, co-author of The Facebook Book, about the frenzy around the popular website and the future of Facebook.
