The Latino Electorate
Why aren’t there any major Latino candidates for governor next year? Because a new study from the Pew Hispanic Center confirms what both parties already know: California’s electorate is still majority white, even though local elections have witnessed a surge in Latino Voting Power. John Beaupre talks with Antonio Gonzales, president of the Southwest Voter Education Registration Project.
Eminent Domain Decision
Last week the Supreme Court gave cities the right to bulldoze homes and small stores to make way for business development. The five-to-four decision rules against residents in New London, Connecticut, going further than ever in allowing private developers to force out home owners to make way for large projects. Guest-host Jon Beaupre talks to Steve Greenhut, editorial writer and columnist.
Medical Funding Deal
The Schwarzenegger administration has announced a deal with the federal government that will switch half a million Medi-Cal patients to a managed care program. The deal will result in an additional $3.3 billion in federal funds for the state, but hospitals, doctors, and patient advocates fear it will mean fewer services for the poor, and less money for providers. Jon Beaupre talks with health care advocates about how the deal will affect the people who rely on Medi-Cal.
Twist of Faith
This Oscar nominated documentary is the story of a man who confronts the trauma of past sexual abuse by a Catholic priest, only to find his decision shatters relationships with his family, community, and his faith. Guest host, Jon Beuapre, speaks with the film’s director, Kirby Dick.
