Supreme Court Adjourns
The United States Supreme Court adjourns today after making rulings on five remaining cases. USC Law School professors Irwin Chemerinsky and David Cruz join Larry to discuss the decisions that were just handed down and explore the ramifications of various controversial rulings that were recently made by the high court.
Chris Reed: Orange County News
Chris Reed, op-ed column editor for the Orange County Register joins Larry to discuss the latest Orange County news.
Nation-Building
Michael Hirsh, Senior Editor at Newsweek, joins host Larry Mantle to talk about his new book At War With Ourselves: Why America is Squandering Its Chance to Build a Better World (Oxford). In it, he discusses the role America now plays as the world's only superpower, or "uberpower." Hirsh argues that the US needs to partner with global institutions like the United Nations to avoid adverse reaction from the global community. He writes that Bush's foreign policy has corrected the "appeasement" of the Clinton administration with his war on terror, but that the Administration needs to work harder to cultivate international good-will. What is the role of the UN in relation to the United States? And is America trying to do nation-building "on the cheap" in countries like Iraq and Afghanistan?
Native Americans in the 21st Century
Sherman Alexie writes about Native Americans searching for their identities in his new collection of short stories called Ten Little Indians: Stories (Grove). Some of his characters are poor; some drink too much, and all are trying to find their place in the 21st century. Sherman Alexie joins Larry Mantle to talk about his work.
