California's College Crisis

AirTalk for June 16, 2004

A new report released yesterday by the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education reveals that the crisis in California's public colleges is deeper, more severe and longer-term than previously expected. According to the report, it will be impossible to fulfill the state's promise of extending college opportunity to all adults who could benefit without a significant new statewide commitment to public colleges. Larry Mantle talks about the study and new efforts to confront California's college funding crisis with Nancy Shulock, Executive Director of the Institute for Higher Education Leadership and Policy, at California State University, Sacramento, and Abdi Soldani, Executive Director of the Campaign for College Opportunity.

Joining Host Larry Mantle is David Ropeik, Director of Risk Communication at the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis. Ropeik says that risks have personality traits. We fear and dread being eaten alive, even though the likelihood of it happening is remote. Many factors play into our fear of certain risks, including our familiarity with them.

Contending that "Radcons," as he calls them, demean liberal ideas that are the backbone of our democracy, Reich suggests how liberals can recognize their own strength and reclaim their political clout.
