State May Be Sued For Failing To Build Radioactive Waste Dump
California may be sued over its failure to build a low-level radioactive dump site somewhere in the state. The Southwestern Low-Level Radioactive Waste Commission, a four-state committee making the threat, has two Schwarzenegger appointees on its panel. Larry Mantle talks with LA Times staff writer Robert Salladay.
Santee School And The LAUSD
Larry Mantle talks with Angelo Bellomo, Director of the LAUSD’s Office of Environmental Health and Safety and Jan Perry, Los Angeles City Councilwoman for the 9th District about Santee High School and the issue that contaminated fill dirt may have been used during construction.
Questions About The Greer Perchlorate Study Arise
Five years ago, a research team recruited seven people to drink water laced with trace amounts of perchlorate, a rocket fuel. The study concluded that the levels commonly found in drinking water are safe. However, researchers are now concerned that the original study depended on testing healthy adults—not children. And nobody looked at the danger to pregnant mothers. Larry talks to Dr. Richard Johnston of the National Academy of Science Committee on the Health Effects of Perchlorate and Dr. Gina Solomon, Senior Scientist at the National Resources Defense Council.
Illegal Immigration And The Southland Economy
Michael Bazdarich, with the UCLA Anderson Forecast, and Stephen Levy, director and senior economist at the Palo Alto Center for Continuing Study of the California Economy, join Larry for a discussion of the pros and cons of illegal immigration on the economy of Southern California.
