Los Angeles’ Living Wage Ordinance was passed in 1997. This new study analyzes the impact of the Ordinance on workers and employers and looks at the effects of living wage policies, which have been adopted by more than 120 local governments around the country. Larry talks with Professor David Fairris, one of the authors of the new study, and Rusty Hammer, President and CEO of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, about the report’s findings.

Schwarzenegger And The Kyoto Accord

The US, Monaco and Australia are the only developed nations that failed to sign onto the Kyoto Protocols, an international agreement to cut greenhouse gases. Governor Schwarzenegger announced Wednesday that, to some measure, he would bring the State of California on board, by cutting greenhouse emissions by 80 percent over the next 50 years. Larry Mantle talks with Alan Lloyd, Secretary of the California Environmental Protection Agency, and Craig Noble, Director of Communications for Northern California for the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Conference On New Urbanism

Though Southern California is considered the perfect example of suburban sprawl at it worst, it's also home to many revitalized towns and regenerated livable, urban neighborhoods and communities. Some LA area designers, architects, city planners and developers are embracing the concepts of New Urbanism, concentrating on making cities and towns great places to live rather than extending the city into the suburbs. Larry Mantle discusses the New Urbanism movement with an architect, a city manager and a developer and also previews the 13th Annual Congress for the New Urbanism to be held June 9 -12 in Pasadena. This conference is the leading international for dedicated to advancing urbanism and promoting alternatives to sprawl. Larry Mantle talks with Rick Cole, City Manager for the city of Ventura, Stefanos Polyzoides, a principal of Moule and Polyzoides, Architects and Urbanists, and Michael Dieden, President of Creative Housing Associates.
