DNC Issues Update From Party Head
Terry McAuliffe, Chair of the Democratic National Committee, joins host Larry Mantle to discuss his party's concerns regarding the likely vacancy, or vacancies, on the Supreme Court in June, at the end of this session. The Democratic National Committee thinks that the Bush Administration is gearing up for one or more Supreme Court retirements, with a conservative nominee waiting in the wings. As it stands, Justice Sandra Day O'Conner is the swing vote on the court, something that could change if Bush has his way with the court. The DNC is concerned that the Supreme Court could become a rubber stamp for the Bush Administration, threatening long-held liberal values like affirmative action, Title IX, and Choice.
Corporateering
Consumer watchdog Jamie Court coined the term "corporateering." It means "the act of prioritizing commercial gain over individual, social, or cultural gain." Court contends that corporateering has pervaded American society on many levels, affecting how we spend our time, what we hear, terms we use, and much more. Think about how you are charged a fee to obtain your own credit history, or how you are forced to listen to advertisements when you are on hold with a company. Joining host Larry Mantle is Jamie Court, Executive Director of the Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights, a non-profit, non-partisan consumer watchdog group. Mr. Court's new book is called Corporateering: How Corporate Power Steals Your Personal Freedom . . .And What You Can Do About It. Also weighing in on the conversation is Tim Cavanaugh, staff writer for Reason magazine and a web editor for Reason.com
The Chinese In America
Larry Mantle talks with author Iris Chang about her new book, The Chinese In America: A Narrative History that discusses the 150 year history of one of the fastest growing ethnic groups in the United States.
